James, by Percival Everett - Tom

This novel is set in the South of the United States of America in the leadup to Civil War. It reveals a life not experienced by most of us who live comfortable lives in this century. I will not give away the story other than to say it features the adventures of a slave named Jim by his owners and would like to be known as James of the title. He is assisted by Huckleberry Finn throughout.

Those of you who have read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn will be aware of use of the N Word. This word is used quite liberally throughout the book. However if you persevere it will open up the world of the slave in the deep south in 1860’s. The casual savagery of slave owners is described in some detail. Jim is not the ignorant fool that the white people expect of a slave.

Although this is a novel, I recommend this book as one that will educate those still ignorant of the effects of slavery and the desire for freedom of the enslaved.
